The Australian
Society for the Study of Labour History was founded in 1961
to study "the working class 'situation' . . . and
social history in the fullest sense". The Society aims not
only to encourage teaching and research in labour history,
but also the preservation of the records of working people
and the labour movement. It desires to make history a vital
part of popular consciousness, a matter for reflection and
debate, at a time when it is under attack from prominent conservative
intellectuals.
The Society draws
its membership from labour movement activists, community historians,
teachers, and scholars in many fields. It also maintains close
links with the international community of labour historians.
The Society has
branches in Canberra, Brisbane, Hunter Valley, Sydney, Illawarra,
Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmania, and Perth. Branches are involved
in labour history and research, and heritage preservation.
They publish newsletters, and hold regular talks and conduct
special events, usually in conjunction with the labour community.
The Society and its branches receive strong support from the
trade union movement.

The Society publishes
Labour History - A Journal of Labour and Social History
The interdisciplinary
nature of labour history, and its acceptance of less traditional
sources, including folklore and oral testimony, make it a
fascinating field, alive to past and present social justice
issues. The journal, which has been appearing twice yearly
since 1962, is the premier outlet for refereed, scholarly
articles in its field in Australasia. Because the ASSLH aims
to raise historical awareness in the community, Labour History
also publishes essays, reviews, and memoirs that reflect the
involvement of labour historians in the making of history.
Labour History is a member of the History Co-operative, based
at the University of Illinois. Direct enquiries to the Editor,

The Australian
Society for the Study of Labour History Melbourne
For more than
thirty years the Melbourne Branch of the Australian Society
for the Study of Labour History (Incorporated) has published
its newsletter Recorder, held regular meetings with
guest speakers or seminar discussions and organised events
to commemorate important anniversaries. We have published
special issues of Recorder and played a part in reviving
the public profile of Labour Day in Victoria. We have restored
historic memorials and given assistance to the Labour Historical
Graves Committee. Our members continue to write labour history,
assist researchers, unions and other interested people. Direct
enquiries to the Melbourne Branch President, Peter Love, email:
