John Sutter is one of the most controversial and least understood figures of the American West. Any biographer attempting to wade into the thicket of confusion and misdirection surrounding his life must be armed with a great depth of research materials, the ability to use multiple historiographic tools, and a great deal of common sense. Fortunately, Albert Hurtado is just such a scholar, and his book will very likely be recognized as the definitive biography of Sutter for years to come. |
