Fort Bowie was in the heartland of Apache country near Apache Spring and Apache Pass, and its small garrison was engaged in active military operations for nearly thirty years. Doug McChristian, retired research historian for the National Park Service, has written a model history of this frontier military post. His extensive research and thorough documentation support a splendid narrative history of Fort Bowie, the Apache bands and their leaders, the development of Arizona Territory, the organization and leadership of the U. S. Army in the region, and the details of warfare in the desert lands of the Southwest and northern Mexico. The book is enhanced with five maps and fifty-eight illustrations. |
