Anyone who believes too much has been said about the Corps of Discovery, especially in these bicentennial years, will find this collection to be a pleasant surprise. Drawn from presentations at an eponymous 2003 conference, none of these eleven essays becomes lost in minutiae, gives the faintest hint of simple celebration, or overstates the expedition's significance. Instead, the collection demonstrates how much the expedition reveals when placed in new contexts, and how rewarding such scholarship can be. |
