      Chiefs & Generals is part of the publisher's series of Notable Westerners. Like its predecessors, its purpose is to "explore the real stories behind the personalities and events that continue to forge our national character" (p. vii). The book contains nine essays dealing with Indian leaders and army officers who played major roles in the white conquest of the trans-Mississippi West. . . .
