As a skier, Coloradan, and historian I've been looking forward to reading this book. Given the significance of the ski industry to regional economies and images, it seemed odd that so little has been written about it and nothing with any sophisticated analysis. Now, armed with useful theory, deep work in the archives, and skillful analysis, Annie Gilbert Coleman has given us the book we've needed. Her examination of the history of western skiing and its evolution from a method of transportation to a vast industry supporting a significant portion of the region's economy is both important and a good read. The story of skiing operates as a perfect example of something we perceive as frivolous turning out to be deeply emblematic of modern American culture. |
