Isabella Greenway: An Enterprising Woman. By Kristie Miller. (Tucson: University of Arizona Press, 2004. xv + 307 pp. Illustrations, notes, bibliography, index. $24.95.)

      Before the modern woman's movement it was rare to find a female politician who wielded significant power, so an examination of the life of Isabella Greenway, Arizona's first female representative in Congress, is a welcome addition to the existing scholarship on western politics and women. While most women initially came to public office as the widows or daughters of politicians, Greenway rose to power in Arizona through her own skills and connections. Her parents were close friends with Theodore Roosevelt, and in school she began a lifelong friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt. . . .
