Sweet Cakes, Long Journey joins recent trends in Chinese American history that reach beyond the California experience to examine Chinese communities elsewhere, thereby demonstrating how complicated such history is. Also, through seeking to counter perceptions of Chinese as "docile and submissive," this study of Portland Chinese during the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries expands our understanding of Chinese proactivism (p. 7).
