In On the Bloody Road to Jesus, H. Henrietta Stockel chronicles the religious journey of the Chiricahua Apaches from the creation of the world to the twenty-first century. Building on her earlier work on the Apaches, including Women of the Apache Nation (Reno, 1991), Survival of the Spirit (Reno, 1993), and Chiricahua Apache Women and Children (College Station, TX, 2000), Stockel argues that the Chiricahua Apaches have incorporated Christian practices into their lives without abandoning their traditional beliefs. She suggests that Apaches used various forms of accommodation and resistance to maintain these traditions in the face of Spanish and American missionary efforts. |
