The Future of the Southern Great Plains. Edited by Sherry L. Smith. (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2003. xii + 275 pp. Illustrations, maps, notes, bibliography, index. $29.95.)

The Southern Great Plains is a forgotten or at least overlooked region. It brings to mind the mental images of wheat and cotton fields, ranging cattle, and scattered oil wells. The Southern Great Plains also is a region of political conservatism linked to the Republican Party, religious pietism, and public faith in capitalism. Most importantly the Southern Great Plains is undergoing great social, economic, and political change.
