In the mid-1790s, alarmed that British traders out of Canada had begun operations on the Upper Mississippi, Minnesota, and Missouri rivers, Spanish officials in St. Louis sent three expeditions to challenge the invaders. The third of these forays, destined for the upper Missouri, left St. Louis in late August of 1795 under the leadership of thirty-six-year-old James Mackay, assisted by twenty-five-year-old John Evans. |
