In the early 1990s, John Sherry found his way to a small community of Navajos living in the Chuskas, a mountain range located in the eastern portion of the Navajo Nation. He was there to gather research for his doctorate in anthropology, but he suggests that Land, Wind, and Hard Words is a different piece of writing than his dissertation. In fact, he says that he wrote this book because the Navajos he worked with encouraged him to do so. That community, which in 1991 had just created a loose organization that they called "Diné Citizens Against Ruining our Environment" (Diné CARE), wanted him to tell their story. |
