On the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the University of Oklahoma Press presents us with a new edition of a fine book on George Armstrong Custer-Robert M. Utley's classic, Cavalier in Buckskin. This new edition, profusely illustrated and in a larger format, is still the best story available of the boy general's transformation from a Civil War "cavalier" to the postwar "cavalier in buckskin." |

Utley, America's foremost frontier military historian, admits he had "lived with Custer intimately since the age of twelve" (p. 6). His long association with the battlefield and his incomparable understanding of the army in the West paved the way for the 1988 first release of this book-another addition to the vast array of Custer and Little Bighorn literature. But unlike many others, Utley's book made a solid contribution to a popular topic. |
