In Fragile Paradise, Mansel G. Blackford deftly examines the complex environmental and social problems the island of Maui faced during the last four decades, paying particular attention to the challenges posed by tourism. The subject of Blackford's study is the complicated interactions between local interests that arise from efforts to find broadly acceptable solutions to the problems of physical isolation, reliance on a limited economy, and population growth in a limited physical environment. A focused book on a complex subject, Fragile Paradise has much to recommend it. |
