The Arikaras, or "Rees" as white traders referred to them, were a farming and hunting people of the upper Missouri River who often warred against neighboring tribes. They also presented a barrier to fur traders moving up the Missouri River trade avenue. The attack on William Henry Ashley's trading company in June 1823 led to the brief Arikara War; a force of soldiers, traders, and Sioux allies, led by colonel Henry Leavenworth, marched up the river in August and attacked the two Arikara villages, with less than effective results. |
