Joseph J. Pennell was a professional photographer who captured images of Junction City, Kansas, at the beginning of the twentieth century. The photographs cover a wide segment of the society, from business leaders, to soldiers, to prostitutes. John Pultz's introductory essay on the role of the commercial photographer during this period helps set the context of why certain subjects were photographed and for what purposes. In addition, Pultz shows how Pennell skillfully used angle and lighting to make even mundane scenes take on a particular effect. |
