Henry M. Jackson: A Life in Politics. By Robert G. Kaufman. (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 2000. x + 548 pp. Illustrations, notes, bibliography, index. $30.)

     In this rich and comprehensive political biography, Robert Kaufman has executed the awesome task, long overdue, of documenting the epic career of Henry M. Jackson, Democratic senator from Washington. A Life in Politics is no exaggeration; "Scoop" Jackson's congressional tenure encompassed most of the Cold War, spanned nine presidential administrations, and included two unsuccessful bids for the presidency. Kaufman's exhaustively researched account covers four decades of United States domestic and foreign affairs, deftly using Jackson's perspective to navigate readers through the sea of policy history from this era. . . .
