Book Review
The Ute Indians of Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. By Virginia McConnell Simmons. (Niwot: University Press of Colorado, 2000. xix + 323 pp. Illustrations, maps, notes, bibliography, index. $29.95.)
|
In this ambitious work, Virginia McConnell Simmons chronicles the history of the entire Ute tribe from prehistory to the twentieth century. Throughout most of the book, she focuses on the Utes' struggle to retain their culture and land and to resist Euroamerican invasion. Simmons effectively illustrates how the Utes persevered despite decimation of their environment, costly warfare, and relegation to remote reservations. Although her emphasis is on political history and Ute-Euroamerican relations, short chapters provide a rich description of Ute land and culture at the time of Euroamerican contact. |
