This book is surprising. Not that it was unexpected, since it has been a work in progress since the early 1970s. But given the fact that both the author and his subject are known as Borderlands historians, it was only natural to expect a work on Borderlands historiography. |

That indeed is what Almaráz has given us. Through a rich variety of sources, he provides a rare if not unique insight into the craft of an historian. Almaráz also details Castañeda's major works, his expertise as a Latin American Collections specialist, his experience editing guides to major collections at the University of Texas, his deft arrangement of major new accessions, and his diplomatic promotion of relations at home and abroad. |
