Editorial
The issue starts with an erudite technical paper by Thomas Boothby regarding the design of American lenticular truss bridges. SIA stalwart Vic Darnell wrote an important article on this bridge type a number of years ago, and Boothby brings some new perspectives to the topic. Based in an engineering analysis of structural design, the article offers novel insights into the design process, something often lacking in more descriptive work.

Gordon Pollard and Haagen Klaus provide us with an extensive discussion of the Adirondack bloomery iron industry, focused on a case study drawn from Clintonville, New York. Pollard and his SUNY-Plattsburgh students have carried out thorough excavations on a large bloomery operation over several years' time and have amassed an impressive suite of documentary data, as well. This paper illustrates the results of that work, offering a detailed look into the industry and this particular example, melding the physical evidence with the documents for a rich presentation.

Upcoming issues of IA will include articles on industrial locomotives in the United Kingdom, the coexistence of 19th-century sawmilling and salt manufacture in the Saginaw Valley of Michigan, gold processing facilities in California, and at least two more bridge papers.

| We also have book reviews on a wide range of topics, as usual, thanks to Terry Reynolds and a willing group of careful reviewers from the membership. |
