OHS RESEARCH LIBRARY RECENTLY PROCESSED COLLECTIONS | |
| In July, the OHS Research Library acquired significant additions to one of its largest and most important photograph collections, the Kiser Photo Co. photographs (Org. Lot 140). The company's founding partner, Fred H. Kiser, was one of the most successful and widely known landscape and commercial photographers in the American West from 1901 through the late 1920s. His work, often brilliantly hand-colored in oils to simulate the natural colors of the mountains and forests he photographed, was credited with popularizing Crater Lake National Park and the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, as well as promoting the establishment of Glacier National Park in Montana. The Research Library's collection of Kiser Photo Co. photographs was initially acquired in 1982 but lacked many of the hand-colored photographs for which they were known. This recent acquisition joins 124 new photographs to the collection, including 60 unique colored panoramas and prints. Examples from the collection include Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. These prints demonstrate Fred Kiser's mastery of color and texture to enliven his photographs. |

Have you ever wondered how to care for those old diaries, scrapbooks, home movies, photographs, or family letters in your basement or attic – or even if they were worth saving? Bring them to share at "Archives Roadshow," a take on the popular PBS series, "Antiques Roadshow." "Archives Roadshow" is your opportunity to talk to OHS archivists about your personal archival materials. You will learn basic techniques for preserving your family's history and consult one-on-one with an archivist to discover the historic value of your documents. "Archives Roadshow" cannot provide monetary values for any objects brought to the workshop, but we will be happy to refer you to local appraisers. Reservations required by December 5, 2006. Limit: 40. Fee: $10.00
CORRECTIONS
In the Spring 2006 issue of the Oregon Historical Quarterly (107:1), "Guild's Lake Industrial District: Change Over Time" and "Comin' and Goin': Memories of Jazzman Jim Pepper" contained errors. On page 102, a date was incorrectly given as 1848; Vanport was flooded in 1948. The photograph on page 123 was taken by Jim Quinlan, and the scene photographed was Quebec City. In the Summer 2006 issue of the Oregon Historical Quarterly (107:2), "The Jefferson Peace Medal: Provenance and the Collections of the Oregon Historical Society" included an error on page 295. The photograph was identified as depicting the building that housed the Arlington Club between 1892 and 1919. The building pictured is where the Club met after 1910.
