"WOODEN BEAMS AND RAILROAD TIES" WINS NATIONAL AWARD

 
"Wooden Beams and Railroad Ties: the History of Oregon's Built Environment," a narrative of the Oregon Historical Society's online Oregon History Project and a series of workshops for teachers and the public, won two National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation in the categories of Partnerships with a Private/Non-Profit Entity and Educational Program. Richard Engeman, public historian at the Oregon Historical Society, wrote the narrative and led the workshops, which will be available again this summer and fall. The Oregon Heritage Commission and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office were partners in the project, and the Oregon Cultural Trust provided funding.  
   

PACIFIC NORTHWEST HISTORY CONFERENCE

 
The 59th annual Pacific Northwest History Conference will meet in Portland on April 27–29, 2006 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Northwest Oral History Association. The theme of the conference is "Making Sense of Place: Regional Identities and Communities in the Pacific Northwest." It will be held in Portland, Oregon, at the Doubletree Hotel Lloyd Center.  
   

NORTHWEST ARCHIVES ANNUAL MEETING

 
The annual meeting of the Northwest Archivists, Inc. will be held in Butte, Montana on May 18–20, 2006. The Northwest Archivists, Inc. is a regional association of professional archivists, users of archives, and others interested in the preservation and use of archival materials in the Pacific Northwest.  
   

OREGON HERITAGE CONFERENCE

 
The 2006 Oregon Heritage Conference will take place from May 18 to 20 in Coos Bay, Oregon. Stephen Dow Beckham will be the keynote speaker for the conference, whose theme will be "Heritage Preservation: It's a Local Story." The conference is sponsored by the Oregon Heritage Commission and the Coquille Indian Tribe. The Coos Historical and Maritime Museum, the Coos Art Museum, and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department are helping to organize the tours, workshops, and seminars.
