To the Editor:

I'd like to call to your attention to an error in this interesting story of Tektronix (OHQ vol. 106, no. 4). On page 586, it is stated that Howard Vollum died in a plane crash in 1986. Howard died in 1986 of natural causes. It was Jack Murdock who died in a plane crash a number of years earlier.
In 1986 I was a newly elected director of Tektronix and had only just become acquainted with Howard when I received the news that he had died. I believe it was in February of 1986. At that time I was still chairman of The Dow Chemical Company from which position I retired in July 1986. I later served as chairman and chief executive of Tektronix and retired from its board in 1991.
TEK was a fine company with many great people, and I enjoyed my association with it. We went through a very rough patch in the late 1980s but were able to get our act together and turn the business around. It's gratifying to see that TEK is doing very well presently.
