2006 Sterling Fellowships in Pacific Northwest History | |
| The Oregon Historical Society is accepting applications for Donald J. Sterling, Jr., Research Fellowships to encourage original, scholarly, interpretive research in Pacific Northwest history. Fellows will be in residence in the Oregon Historical Society Research Library for four weeks between January 1 and August 31, 2006. |

The $2,500 Senior Fellowship is open to all applicants with experience in historical research and writing. The $2,000 Graduate Research Fellowship is restricted to candidates for advanced degrees in appropriate fields. Recipients are expected to submit a written report on their research and to prepare an article for possible publication in the Oregon Historical Quarterly. |

| Jasper G. and Minnie Stevens Literary Prize |
|
| The Oregon Historical Society is accepting submissions for the Stevens Prize competition. The prize, with a cash award of $3,000 and publication of the manuscript by the Oregon Historical Society Press, recognizes the best original fiction or nonfiction literary treatment of Oregon history, The deadline for submission is October 1, 2005. |
|
|
Manuscripts must be grounded solidly in historical research about Oregon. Subjects may include biography, narrative history, monographs, and community history. Previously published manuscripts, anthologies, and manuscripts written for very young children (that is, children younger than eight years old) will not be considered. |

| James B. Castles Fellowship |
|
The Center for Columbia River History announces the James B. Castles Fellowship to encourage original scholarly research that contributes to public understanding of the history of the Columbia River Basin. The $3,000 fellowship is open to graduate students, professional historians, and independent scholars. CCRH encourages proposals from diverse historical perspectives, including social, ethnic, political, cultural, and environmental approaches. Fellows will be in residence at the Center for Columbia River History in Portland-Vancouver for four weeks during the granting year (June 1, 2005–August 31, 2006). They will deliver a public talk on their research topic and submit an article for possible publication in a regional journal and a written report on their research for the CCRH archives. | Pacific Northwest History Conference |

For the fifty-eighth year, historians, scholars from related fields, students, history enthusiasts, and the general public will gather at the Pacific Northwest History Conference and the associated meeting of the Northwest Oral History Association to consider the region's past and interpretations of it. The theme for 2005 is "Explorations: Traveling the Full Range of Pacific Northwest History," and the conference will take place April 28–30, 2005, at the Red Lion Hotel Boise Downtowner in Boise, Idaho. Montana The Magazine of Western History invites applications for the 2005 Merrill G. Burlingame–K. Ross Toole Award. Named in honor of two of Montana's most influential historians, this annual competition recognizes the best article-length manuscript written by an undergraduate or graduate student on any western history topic. The winner will receive a $150 cash award, plaque, and consideration for publication in Montana The Magazine of Western History. Students in history and other disciplines are encouraged to apply.
