| Jeannette Rankin: America's Conscience, by Norma Smith, introduction by Kathryn Anderson (Montana Historical Society Press, Helena, 2002. Photographs, bibliography, index. 239 pages. $17.95 paper)
Jeannette Rankin of Montana has the distinction of being the first woman elected to the U.S.Congress and the only congressperson to vote against U.S. involvement in both world wars. A lifelong advocate of women's rights, children's rights, and peace, she continued to speak out on causes well into her late eighties. Interviews with Rankin conducted between 1963 and 1971 are the foundation for this essential work. |

| Elusive Truth: Four Photographers at Manzanar, by Gerald H. Robinson, introduction by Archie Miyatake (Carl Mautz Publishing, Nevada City, California, 2002. Photographs, notes, bibliography, index. 112 pages. $20.00 paper)
Photographers Ansel Adams, Clem Albers, Dorothea Lange, and Toyo Miyatake created this visual document of life at the Manzanar Relocation Camp in rural California east of the Sierra Nevada. Robinson has added explanatory text, but the real story is told in the images that depict families visiting, children playing, and teenagers picnicking, isolated by barbed wire, barracks, and the vast desert landscape. |
