Lecture Series
| OHQ readers may be interested in two lecture series associated with the Oregon Historical Society this spring. |
"Discovering Oregon Originals," presented by OHS and the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission, examines Oregon's cultural history. Programs will be held weeknights at the Multnomah County Library's Central Library (801 S.W. 10th, Portland) and during the noon hour at the Madison Room at OHS (entrance on S.W. Madison Street, between S.W. Broadway and Park Avenues). Upcoming lectures focus on James Beard, literature and art associated with the Japansese American internment during World War II, and author Frederic Homer Balch. |
The Portland State University Friends of History lecture series, "History Research in Progress," gives professional and student historians the opportunity to present their ideas in a forum that allows for discussion and audience interaction. Lectures are held on the third Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. in the Madison Room at OHS. |
Both lecture series are free of charge and open to the public. Details about dates and schedules are available on the OHS Web site (www.ohs.org) or by calling OHS at 503-306-5198. |

Olmsted Symposium
| In 1903, John Charles Olmsted developed plans for a comprehensive, interconnected parks system in Portland. Park planners, citizen advocates, land-use planners, landscape architects, architects, and civic leaders will gather at a seminar in Portland April 28–30, 2003, to commemorate the centennial of Olmsted's plan. "Olmsted Landscape Legacy, 1903–2003," will celebrate the foresight of Olmsted's plan and challenge the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region to create a twenty-first-century park and greenspace legacy that equals its Olmsted legacy. The symposium will be held at Smith Memorial Student Union, Portland State University, Portland, Oregon. Details can be found at www.olmsted2003.org. |
