During a Christmas celebration in 1913, a man walked into the Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan, and shouted "fire." In the ensuing panic, revelers rushed down the stairs toward the exit, only to be trapped in the doorway, which resulted in seventy-four deaths from suffocation. At the time local newspapers characterized the incident as a tragic accident. However by presenting recently uncovered court records and archival material, Steve Lehto's Death's Door makes a compelling argument that the deaths were actually the largest mass murder in the history of Michigan. |
