ANNUAL MEETING
CANADIAN COMMITTEE ON LABOUR HISTORY
QUEBEC, 25 MAY 2001

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order at 11:55 A.M.

Members present accepted the agenda as presented.

      Members present adopted the minutes of the last meeting as presented in Labour/Le Travail, 303-305.

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT

Jim Naylor reported on the accomplishments of various CCLH members. It was noted that Bryan Palmer has been appointed to a Canada Research Chair at Trent University and that Peter Campbell won the Kenny Prize in Marxist and Labour/Left Studies. Members were urged to put forth nominations for the Kenny Prize. The deadline for nominations is 30 June 2001.

      A discussion took place about future CCLH Workshops usually held around the annual Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities. Craig Heron expressed an interest in working on next year_s event in conjunction with Congress in Toronto. It could be organized in Hamilton at the Workers_ Art and Heritage Centre. Raymond Léger expressed interest in working on the 2003 Workshop in Halifax, and Jim Naylor suggested that the following year_s event could be held at the Ukrainian Labour Temple in Winnipeg, which has become the site of several working-class history events.

      The sympathies of the CCLH were extended to the secretary of the Committee, Cecilia Danysk, who was absent owing to the death of her son.

      Josephine Thompson, Publication Assistant for Labour/Le Travail was introduced to the members present. The appreciation of the Committee was extended to Irene Whitfield and Josephine Thompson for their work on behalf of the Committee and the production of the journal over the past year.


REPORT OF THE TREASURER

Greg Kealey presented the financial report.

      Members present accepted the financial report.


REPORT OF THE EDITOR

Bryan Palmer thanked Irene Whitfield, Josephine Thompson, and the interns for their work in producing the recent fall and spring issues of Labour/Le Travail. He noted that the spring 2001 issue has been mailed to subscribers. Production of the fall issue of the journal is well underway. Members present were urged to submit articles to the journal. Progress was reported in the production of the web site.

      Bryan Palmer thanked Alvin Finkel for his work as Book Review editor over the past year, and reported that the Editorial Board would be dealing with the position of French language book review editor at its upcoming meeting.

      Irene Whitfield urged members to renew their subscriptions to Labour/Le Travail and to try to interest students in subscribing. She also urged members to try to acquire mailing lists when attending conferences. A multi-year subscription rate has been implemented to try to increase the number of subscriptions to the journal.

      Greg Kealey urged members to take copies of the brochure and sample issues of CCLH publications to conferences

      Members present accepted the editor's report.


REPORT OF THE PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE

Greg Kealey reported on behalf of the Publications Committee. Cy Gonick_s biography of Bill Walsh is about to go to press. Members were urged to suggest new book projects. Bryan Palmer reported that the Boag Foundation is interested in publishing a History of Labour in BC in conjunction with the CCLH. Jim Naylor raised the issue of the Cecil Ross Foundation Oral History Project.


OTHER BUSINESS

Franca Iacovetta reported that Liz Faue is interested in co-sponsoring sessions at the forthcoming North American Labor History Conference in Detroit. Franca Iacovetta also announced the formation of a North American Feminist Working Group intended to build connections across linguistic, generation, and gender divisions.

      Some discussion took place regarding the CCLH's connection with the Labor and Working-Class History Association. Jim Naylor suggested that it might be useful to have a more formal relationship. Bryan Palmer suggested that the Presidents of the two associations communicate with one another. The issue was left for the Executive to discuss.

      Craig Heron reported that the Workers' Arts and Heritage Centre (WAHC) had launched its first travelling exhibition in Sudbury. Problems of funding for WAHC were noted and he urged CCLH members to take out memberships.

      Jim Naylor urged members to send their course outlines to him for inclusion on the CCLH's "Teaching Labour History" page on its web site.

      Greg Kealey reported on Michael Lonardo's very useful Labour Bibliography Web site. The site is now searchable and it can be accessed through the Memorial University Library web page: ca/library/colldev/labour/
