Michael Les Benedict is Professor of History at The Ohio State University and past president of the SHGAPE. His many publications on the Reconstruction and Gilded Age eras include "Laissez Faire and Liberty: A Re-Evaluation of the Meaning and Origins of Laissez-Faire Constitutionalism," Law and History Review 3 (Fall 1985): 293-331 and "Reform Republicans and the Retreat from Reconstruction," in The Facts of Reconstruction: Essays in Honor of John Hope Franklin, eds., Alfred Moss and Eric Anderson (1991).

Stephanie Cassidy is a doctoral candidate in the history department of the University of California, San Diego, working on a dissertation about the Art Students League of New York, of which she is the archivist and founding editor of its journal Linea.
