Ballard Campbell is professor of history at Northeastern University in Boston, where he has taught since receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He specializes in the history of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, political and economic history of the U.S., and comparative states and societies. His publications include The Growth of American Government: Governance from the Cleveland Era to the Present. He is currently the President of the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.

Joseph Cullon is a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he also earned Master's degrees in environmental studies and history. His current research explores the ecologies of everyday life in the forests and shipyards of early New England.
