EUGENE FAIRBANKS is a retired physician living in Bellingham, Washington. He is the author of several books about the work of his father, the celebrated sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks, including Abraham Lincoln Sculpture Created by Avard T. Fairbanks (2002).

MICHAEL P. JOHNSON, a graduate of Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, is a professor of history at Johns Hopkins University. He has written several books on political and social issues in the antebellum South and edited Abraham Lincoln, Slavery, and the Civil War: Selected Writings and Speeches (2001). He is currently working on Conjuring Insurrection, a study of the 1822 Denmark Vesey slave conspiracy in Charleston, South Carolina.

CHANDRA MILLER MANNING is an assistant professor of history at Pacific Lutheran University. Her doctoral dissertation won the 2003 C. Vann Woodward Prize for best dissertation in southern history. She is working on a manuscript about Civil War soldiers' ideas about the meaning of the war, and also on a study of Civil War soldiers' regimental newspapers.

GRAHAM A. PECK is an assistant professor of history at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. He earned the Ph.D. in American history from Northwestern University in 2001 and specializes in antebellum American politics. In 2003 the Abraham Lincoln Institute awarded him the Hay-Nicolay Scholars Prize.

KEITH A. SCULLE is the head of the office of research and education for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. He holds the Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has co-authored five books and numerous journal articles about historical landscapes.

| BRUCE TAP earned the Ph.D. in American history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the author of Over Lincoln's Shoulder: The Committee on the Conduct of the War (1998) and co-author of Shapers of the Great Debate on the American Civil War (forthcoming). He is also working on a book about civil-military relations during the American Civil War. |
