Rodney O. Davis is Szold Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of History and Co-Director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. He is co-editor of Herndon's Informants: Letters, Interviews, and Statements about Abraham Lincoln (1998) and has published extensively in the field of Lincoln studies and nineteenth-century American and Illinois History.

John Hoffmann is librarian of the Illinois Historical Survey and curator of the Lincoln Room of the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign. In the field of Lincoln iconography, he has studied the work of Leonard and Douglas Volk. One of Douglas Volk's Lincoln portraits was adapted for the essay contest discussed in his article.

Martin P. Johnson received his Ph.D. from Brown University in 1993 and is the author of two books and several articles on European history. He lives with his wife and daughter in DeKalb, Illinois, where he is the Acquisitions Editor at Northern Illinois University Press.
