JOHN T. HUBBELL is editor of the distinguished periodical Civil War History and of Battles Won and Lost: An Anthology from Civil War History. He is also associate professor of history at Kent State University and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois-Urbana. Hubbell is currently editing A Biographical Dictionary of the Union.

ARTHUR ZILVERSMIT is author of The First Emancipation: The Abolition of Slavery in the North and editor of Lincoln on Black and White: A Documentary History. Professor of history and director of continuing and graduate education at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois, he completed his doctoral studies at the University of California-Berkeley.

MARY FRANCES BERRY is vice-president of the professional division at Howard University. A native of Nashville, she received the Ph.D. and J.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. Recently, Berry served as Assistant Secretary for Education in the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Her latest book analyzes the career of Supreme Court Justice Harold H.
