| Marek Czaja's Die USA und ihr Aufstieg zur Weltmacht um die Jahrhundertwende is about an important and under-researched topic: German political parties' perceptions of U.S. policy from the early 1890s through 1905. Czaja focuses, appropriately, on the parties' perceptions of U.S. economic and imperial expansion. He pays particular attention to the Spanish-American War and to the second Venezuela crisis of 1902–1903. This fills a gap in the literature: while the last two decades have witnessed increased scholarly interest in U.S.-German relations before the First World War, very little has been written specifically on the German political parties' views of the burgeoning United States. |
