Thomas Jefferson: Reputation and Legacy. By Francis D. Cogliano. (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 2006. xii, 276 pp. $45.00, ISBN 978-0-8139-2619-3.)

Thomas Jefferson still lives, John Adams reportedly mumbled shortly before Adams died on July 4, 1826. But unknown to Adams, Jefferson had died at about the time he uttered those words. The deaths of these two leading revolutionary-era statesmen on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence suggested providential guidance for the American republic and helped shape the legacy of these two men.
