| As we work through the bicentennial years of the exploration of the West by Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and others, Marco Sioli reminds us of the expansionist impulse that underlay the great burst of exploration during Thomas Jefferson's presidency. Sioli's primary argument is that the form of Manifest Destiny began with Jefferson and his vision of a farmers' republic, not with James Monroe and his doctrine, or with John O'Sullivan, who coined the famous phrase on the eve of the war against Mexico. Well-rooted in the growing literature on Jefferson and his explorers, Sioli's account represents a significant advance in the Italian-language historiography of Jeffersonian America. It is also a thoughtful synthesis with a comprehensive vision to which writers of English-language scholarship should pay attention. |
