| This updated version of the original 1996 film, With God on Our Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America (and accompanying book of the same name by William Martin), is not very subtle about the reasons for a remake. When first released, George W. Bush was barely a factor either among the religious Right, the chief subject of this film, or in national politics. But with the Bush presidency headed toward a second term and the president's overwhelming support from born-again Protestants, the producers saw an obvious way to turn the story of the religious Right's rise into a narrative about Bush at the peak of the president's popularity and vilification. The result is a film that represents George W. Bush as the embodiment of contemporary evangelicalism. |
