| In this exhibition the Rio Grande, the Great River of history, legend, and lore, is brought by word, image, and music into the confines of a single room at the Southwestern Writers Collection at Texas State University–San Marcos. The exhibit was created in conjunction with the publication of Rio Grande, an anthology of writings about the border edited by Jan Reid and published by the University of Texas Press. On April 7, a panel discussion was held on site. Participants were Reid, the novelists Rolando Hinojosa-Smith and Dagoberto Gilb, and the journalists Cecilia Ballei and Dick Reavis. |

The exhibition contains books and photographs of river scenes and of featured authors. Several of the photos, incidentally, are ones from a permanent exhibit—"Lonesome Dove Revisited"—based upon photographs, props, and other materials drawn from the filming of Larry McMurtry's 1985 novel for a 1989 cbs miniseries. The photographs are the work of the noted photographer and filmmaker Bill Wittliff, who wrote the screenplay for the miniseries. Wittliff is the original donor-founder of the Southwestern Writers Collection, now under the direction of Connie Todd. The Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern and Mexican Photography, adjacent to the Southwestern Writers Collection, is another essential part of the site in the Alkek Library. Also of ancillary interest is the Center for the Study of the Southwest, directed by Mark Busby and located in Brazos Hall on the campus of Texas State. |
