| Jeffrey J. Matthews's Alanson B. Houghton has two objectives; first, to provide a much needed biography of the most influential ambassador of the New Era and, second, to offer a reinterpretation of American foreign policy during the 1920s. In his excellent work, Matthews succeeds in demonstrating the importance of Houghton's career and the significance of his critique of American policy toward Europe under presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. In terms of establishing a new paradigm for understanding 1920s diplomacy, Matthews has set forth a challenging thesis that future studies will have to engage. |
