| Given the centrality of England's revolutionary upheavals of the mid-seventeenth century to that nation's history, it is surprising that more attention has not been paid to their impact on the English colonies in the Atlantic world. In a time before Atlantic history became popular, portions of the story were explored in dissertations by Bartholomew Schiavo (Brandeis University, 1976), Timothy Sehr (Indiana University, 1977), Ralph Young (Michigan State University, 1971), and Steven Crow (University of Wisconsin, 1974), among others. But Carla Gardina Pestana is the first scholar to attempt to integrate the story of the entire English Atlantic with that of the three kingdoms of the British Isles. To achieve this goal she has mastered an impressive amount of secondary literature, printed documents, and manuscript materials. |
