American Indian Education: A History. By Jon Reyhner and Jeanne Eder. (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2004. x, 370 pp. $29.95, ISBN 0-8061-3593-X.)

Jon Reyhner and Jeanne Eder have written a comprehensive history of Indian education that moves at a brisk pace from colonial times to the present across the North American continent. Their goal is to educate educators. In order for teachers and policy makers today to
understand why the various programs in Indian schools exist and why certain curricula are more likely to lead to success, they must know about the past failures and successes of Indian education. (p. 12)
The authors call on educators to "know the roots of Indian resistance to schooling and the educational empowerment that Indians are striving for" (ibid.). For that worthy purpose, the authors have amassed a great deal of useful information for readers who primarily have need of a textbook about the history of Indian education.
