Peacekeeping on the Plains: Army Operations in Bleeding Kansas. By Tony R. Mullis. (Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 2004. xx, 278 pp. $44.95, ISBN 0-8262-1535-1.)

The subtitle of Tony R. Mullis's Peacekeeping on the Plains: Army Operations in Bleeding Kansas is misleading. Mullis discusses not only the army's role in Kansas Territory but also its 1855 Sioux expedition. These two topics are not clearly related. Nor is it clear why some uses of the army in the 1850s, in bleeding Kansas or against the Sioux, are the focus of study and others, such as the Mormon War or antifilibustering operations, are not. . . .
