| By the time United States forces landed on the Japanese-held island of Luzon in the Philippines during World War II, the Allies were well aware of Japanese brutality toward prisoners of war. Indeed, just days before the landing on Luzon, 150 American prisoners had been massacred by their guards on the Philippine Island of Palawan, as U.S. intelligence officers learned from the few survivors. On January 26, 1945, Gen. Walter Krueger, commanding American troops on Luzon, learned from friendly guerrillas that 500 prisoners, mostly Americans, were being held at a camp outside Cabanatuan City on Luzon. There was every reason to believe these prisoners too would be slaughtered. A rescue must be attempted. |
