| This book received considerable prepublication media coverage for understandable reasons. Any serious examination of slavery at a time when race is an unresolved issue in American life commands attention, especially if it is about George Washington and the peculiar institution. Even if one has serious reservations about aspects of this study, historians need to address it, and certainly the reading public with an interest in the subject should confront it as well. It is the most comprehensive attempt thus far to look at Washington and slavery in all its dimensions. The book is based on a great deal of research in both primary and secondary sources and is quite readable, even absorbing. |
