| Some years ago I wrote a doctoral dissertation on the United Automobile Workers (UAW). When I told acquaintances about the project, they would sometimes ask whether doing the research was dangerous. At first the question puzzled me. Gradually, though, I realized that they were confusing the UAW with the only union they knew anything about, the Teamsters. And they were wondering whether one day I would end up alongside Jimmy Hoffa, buried in a New Jersey landfill, note cards still clutched in my cold, stiff hands. |
