Taking Indian Lands: The Cherokee (Jerome) Commission, 1889–1893. By William T. Hagan. (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2003. x, 279 pp. $59.95,ISBN 0-8061-3513-1.)

Further documentation of the failure of United States officials to keep promises made to Native Americans is hardly necessary. William T. Hagan's Taking Indian Lands does more than underscore the nation's failure to honor its commitments; it provides a detailed account of the methods employed to intimidate tribal leaders into surrendering millions of acres of their land and abandoning their way of life.
