| Parallel Destinies: Canadian-American Relations West of the Rockies. Ed. by John M. Findlay and Ken S. Coates. (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 2002. xxii, 302 pp. Cloth, $50.00, ISBN 0-295-98252-7. Paper, $22.95, ISBN 0-295-98253-5.)

| A book on Canadian-American relations is not a natural best seller in the United States. The subject naturally evokes such comments as "timely but trite," as authors troll the shallow seas of metaphor in search of worthy if tedious aphorisms. Parallel Destinies is not a title designed to leap off the shelves. That is only the first strike against it. Worse, it is a collection of (mainly) conference proceedings. Conference proceedings inhabit a special academic purgatoryeasy to get into, but impossible thereafter to locate or escape from. |
