Irving Howe: A Life of Passionate Dissent. By Gerald Sorin. (New York: New York University Press, 2002. xiv, 386 pp. $32.95, ISBN 0-8147-9821-7.)

"Irving Howe," Gerald Sorin writes in the conclusion of his book, "was a man of ardent loyalties" (p. 298). In this crisply written and well-conceived biography, Sorin captures the essence of these commitments—one to Jewish culture, one to political activism, and one to literary criticism. These strands, in many respects distinct, were woven in complex ways into Howe's persona. Fittingly, Sorin intertwines them to offer a compelling, informative, and balanced account of a leading icon of the New York intellectuals. . . .
