Ausbildung und Neubildung: Die Geschichte Nordamerikas vom Ausgang des 17. Jahrhunderts bis zum Ausbruch der Amerikanischen Revolution 1775 (Cultivation and new growth: The history of North America from the end of the 17th century to the outbreak of the American Revolution, 1775). By Hermann Wellenreuther. (Hamburg: LIT, 2001. viii, 794 pp. €86.90, ISBN 3-8258-4446-3.) In German.

Hermann Wellenreuther's history of North America from the beginning of settlement to the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775 constitutes the first two volumes of a seven-part series, History of North America in Atlantic Perspective from the Beginning until the Present. This series is a massive undertaking that was originally conceived by Erich Angermann and Günther Kahle but is being brought to fruition by younger German historians of America, with Wellenreuther playing a critical role. 1
The volumes combine a focus on the Atlantic context with a deliberate German perspective. Recent interest in the Atlantic world reflects a less nationalistic awareness of connections and encounters among peoples and countries on different sides of this ocean and allows for a more broadly based discussion among historians who explore regions and topics that intersect with developments centered on the Atlantic. The value of this approach is evident, in part because the German voice in this kind of inquiry need no longer be restricted to following German emigrants to the New World. The contrapuntal promise is the insight that other historians, German in this case, can offer in the internationalized discourse about American history. . . .
