This imaginative and thorough piece of scholarship provides a social history of illustrated news journalism—as represented in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper—from the mid-1850s through the 1880s. Itself a tribute to the dedication of its publisher, the book contains 105 illustrations—one for every 2.3 pages of text—and extensive footnotes.	. . .
